New Sochi 2014 Olympic logo with .ru domain. Increase online dialogue, reduce spam?

by Bob Page on 1 December 2009

The Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee today unveiled the first Olympic logo — “Sochi2014.ru” — to incorporate an Internet domain. Developed by brand consultancy Interbrand with a marketing council established by the Sochi committee, the logo was revealed at a 1 December news conference in Moscow.

Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, said the new emblem marks a conscious effort to link the brand to the digital generation, and to encourage online dialogue among Russians, nations, young people, and fans of winter sports.

Blog curators and Web site editors have long noted, and often blocked, substantial quantities of spam originating from the .ru domain. Editors can hope this visible use of .ru, designed to improve online collaboration, also results in efforts to reduce .ru-based spam.
